11 ways to combat overthinking

Overthinking can make our lives unbearable. We must tackle this problem as best we can. Because accepting this problem will cause much bigger problems to arise. For this reason, we have described some methods that will enable us to cope with the problem of overthinking.

1. Awareness is the beginning of change

Before you start addressing or dealing with your overthinking habit, you need to learn to recognize when this problem starts. When you doubt yourself or feel stressed and anxious, step back and see how you react to the situation. This moment of awareness is the seed of the change you want to make.

2. Do things that make you happy

The best way to deal with the problem of overthinking is to do things that make you happy that distract you from thinking. These activities are different for everyone. For example, some people are happy while doing sports, while others are happy when they paint. Find the things that distract you and make you happy and hold on to them.

3. Take a deep breath

You've heard the phrase "take a deep breath and you'll wake up" a million times. This is because it really works. You may be thinking that taking a deep breath is not the solution. But remember, it doesn't hurt to try.

  • Sit in a comfortable position to relax your neck and shoulders.

  • Put one hand on your heart and the other on your stomach.

  • Breathe in and out through your nose, paying attention to how your chest and stomach move as you inhale.

Do this exercise for at least 5 minutes, 3 times a day, when your thoughts are most intense.

4. Meditate

Meditating regularly is a proven way to clear your mind of tense thoughts by turning your attention inward. You can experience positive change by meditating regularly.

5. Focus on the big picture

It's always easy to make things bigger and more negative than they should be. When you start overthinking, ask yourself, “How important will what I think to be in 1 month or 5 years? Is it worth it for me to think so hard?” ask. Asking yourself these questions can be a big step towards solving your overthinking problem.

6. Help others

Helping others can help change your perspective. If you know someone who is going through a difficult time, try to help them. For example, you can take care of a working friend's child for a while, buy food for a sick neighbor, or try to cheer up a friend who is depressed by telling them that everything will be fine.

Realizing that you have the power to make a person's day better prevents negative thoughts from taking control. It also distracts you from negative thoughts.

7. Stop waiting for perfection

Being ambitious is a good thing at a certain level. However, expecting perfection is unrealistic and has negative consequences. As you begin to think, “This has to be perfect,” remind yourself: “It is not possible to make progress while waiting for perfection.”

8. Stop being afraid

In the past, things may not have gone the way you wanted. So it's normal to be afraid to try again and fail. But you should not integrate this fear into your life. Just because you've failed in the past doesn't mean you'll always fail. Never forget, every opportunity is a new beginning.

9. Realize that you cannot predict the future

No one can predict the future, the present is all you have. If you spend the present worrying about the future, you will be wasting your time for nothing. It doesn't do you any good to spend time thinking about what will happen in the future or why it happened in the past. Instead, spend this time on the things that make you happy.

10. Try to take action

One of the biggest causes of overthinking is having difficulties in taking action. Sometimes you regret not taking any concrete action regarding a particular situation and you keep thinking the same things. Therefore, do not be afraid to take action when you have the opportunity.

11. Admit that you did your best

Thoughts of inadequacy, indicating that you weren't smart or hard-working enough in past experiences, also cause overthinking and fear. Acknowledge that you did your best to prevent it and look ahead.
